Gemotions

It was the thud of the mail hitting the mat that finally roused him. He lay on the couch, the TV flickering uselessly. He sat up, slowly, his muscles protesting. A single envelope. He recognized the typeface of the bills, the usual solicitations. But this one was different. A card. "Have a great day!" it announced, the words underlined with a flourish. A hollow laugh escaped him. He didn’t want a great day. He just wanted it to be over. He tossed the card aside, back onto the couch, feeling as heavy as the afternoon itself.
